On October 20, the final conference of the project GHOST was held at the Congress Center Don Orione Artigianelli (Zattere, Venezia. The event was an opportunity to share the results achieved by the project during its three year activities and to deepen, thanks to the interventions of numerous Italian and foreign experts, the issue concerning the management of the fishing gear discarded or abandoned in the sea.
Each project partners presented the main results obtained during the three years of activity, which in particular have contributed to the assessment / quantitative presence of nets and other fishing gear abandoned on the seabed along the Venetian coast, the development of management strategies shared with key stakeholders, the implementation of protocols and guidelines for recovery operations that respect the natural environment, also identifying some possible reuse chains of recoverable materials. All this information is available from a technical manual delivered by the project and presented at the conference. Some technical recommendations, which are considered the most effective for the management of marine litter and environmental and marine and coastal biodiversity protection have been addressed to local responsible authorities / administrations and constitute a document in support of a motion submitted to the Regional Council of Veneto.
During the conference were also presented a number of initiatives undertaken at national and international level for the sustainable management of the waste resulting from fishing activities as well as some innovative technological approaches, which are intended to use these nets to create new production chains, by applying the principles of the circular economy.
The GHOST team thanks all participants, especially the speakers and moderators and hopes that the conference has represented an opportunity for discussion about different ideas and experiences, and has contributed to the deepening of these issues, suggesting new opportunities for the design of future initiatives aimed at reducing the problem of dumping at sea fishing gear and other litter.
